Minion cupcakes have been around for a few years now, but they really took off in popularity after the release of the movie “Despicable Me” in 2010. The movie featured the adorable yellow minions, and kids everywhere were clamoring for minion-themed treats.

These minion cupcakes are a fun and easy way to celebrate your inner child. They’re made with yellow cake mix and decorated with blue frosting, marshmallow eyes, and licorice ropes. The result is a delicious and adorable treat that will be sure to please kids of all ages.


  • 1 box yellow cake mix

  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil

  • 1 cup water

  • 3 eggs

  • 1 cup yellow frosting

  • 1/4 cup blue gel food coloring

  • 16 large marshmallows

  • 32 brown candy-coated milk chocolate candies

  • 2 black licorice wheels

  • Black decorating gel

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line a muffin tin with 24 cupcake liners.
  • In a large bowl, combine cake mix, oil, water, and eggs. Beat until well combined.
  • Pour batter into prepared muffin tins. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Allow cupcakes to cool completely before frosting.
  • In a small bowl, mix together yellow frosting and blue gel food coloring until desired shade of blue is achieved.
  • Cut 1/4-inch circles off both ends of 16 marshmallows to make 32 total rounds.
  • Use a small amount of frosting to attach a milk chocolate candy to each marshmallow round.
  • Place 2 marshmallow eyes on some cupcakes and 1 marshmallow eye on others.
  • Cut 2 small pieces of licorice rope for each cupcake. Use black decorating gel to draw goggles on the marshmallows and to attach the licorice ropes to the cupcakes.


  • For the best results, use a high-quality yellow cake mix.
  • If you don’t have blue gel food coloring, you can use a few drops of blue food coloring.
  • Be sure to let the cupcakes cool completely before frosting them.
  • If you want to get really creative, you can use different colors of frosting and candy to decorate your minion cupcakes.
